INQUIRING MINDS: ‘Literature maps’ and finding new writers

Q. I’m getting back into reading novels after many years of doing other things. Two authors that I enjoyed long ago were John Fowles and James Michener. Is there anyone writing like them these days?

A:::. Here are two websites that are “literature maps,” showing authors similar to John Fowles and James Michener: www.literature-map.com/james+michener.html and www.literature-map.com/john+fowles.html.

Some personal recommendations from a library staff member of authors similar to Michener and Fowles include: Edward Rutherfurd, Ken Follett and Robertson Davies. The library owns titles by all three of these authors. Finally, you might want to take a look at a database the Library subscribes to called NoveListPlus. You’ll find this database, which you can access remotely, located on our Ramsey County Library homepage at www.rclreads.org under the “Books & Reading” category of the Research tab. Of course, if you have questions about any of this, don’t hesitate to contact one of our staffers who can provide more information. Welcome back to reading!  (Library resources.)
