Tri-City Red seeded second in sub-state tournament

Fresh off winning its fourth straight district championship, the Tri-City Red American Legion baseball team now has its sights set on a trip to the state tournament for the third-consecutive year. Tri-City began that quest on July 19 but it’s not the favorite.

Tri-City Red is the No. 2 seed in the Sub-State 8 tournament, the winner of which advances to next week’s state tournament in and around Delano. Stillwater, out of District Three, drew the top seed.

A year ago, Tri-City Red beat Stillwater twice en route to the sub-state championship.

Red opened the post-season on Tuesday at White Bear Lake High School against seventh-seeded and fellow Fourth-District team White Bear. White Bear finished eighth out of eight teams in the district standings. The game was played after the deadline for this edition of the Bulletin.

The Sub-State 8 tournament runs through July 23 with most games scheduled to take place at White Bear Lake High School. There are also four games at CHS Field and Tri-City Red’s only shot at playing at the home of the St. Paul Saints comes in the second round on July 20. Red must win its game against White Bear to play at CHS Field.

In addition to the top two mentioned earlier, the rest of the seeds for the tournament are as follows: Forest Lake is third, Lino Lakes ended up fourth, fifth went to North St. Paul Cavalry, Tri-City Maroon is sixth, White Bear is seventh, Sub-State 8 newcomer Burnsville II is eighth and Chisago Lakes landed in ninth.

Tri-City Red closed out the regular season on July 16 by hosting the North St. Paul 39ers. Red entered the game with a one-game lead over the 39ers in the district standings and its 4-0 victory gave Tri-City the district championship outright.

Tri-City Maroon

Tri-City Maroon landed the sixth seed in the Sub-State 8 tournament and opened the post-season on July 19 with a game at CHS Field. Maroon’s opponent was third-seeded Forest Lake.

In the second round, Maroon will face either White Bear or Tri-City Red on July 20. A first-round win over Forest Lake would send Maroon to a 5 p.m. game at CHS Field while a loss would mean a 2 p.m. contest at White Bear Lake High School.

Victories have been few and far between for Tri-City Maroon this summer. It enters the playoffs with only five wins compared to 21 losses. Tri-City’s wins came against White Bear twice, North St. Paul Cavalry, Prior Lake in a tournament in Rosemount and Bloomington Blue in the Gopher Classic.

Maroon closed out the regular season last week by losing its last three Fourth District contests. Tri-City Red dropped Maroon 12-3 on July 12 and Rosetown swept Maroon in a doubleheader 6-0 and 7-3 on July 13.
