North creates problems for Tartan shotmakers

It was a clash of School District rivals on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Tartan tennis courts. In the end, the North High Polars were on top, 5-2, to gain their first Metro East Conference win of the girls tennis season.

North Coach Dan Stumpf mentioned that the two teams always bring their "A" game when they face each other.

"Our players came out on top again this year," he said with a grin. In 2014, the Polars beat the Titans by 6-1.

"Our record now is 3-7. We've had a couple of tough, close conference losses to Simley [3-4] and yesterday against Hill-Murray [1-6].

"Then we lost to South St. Paul by 4-3. Actually, the girls are playing well. They are playing hard. That's what we really expect out of them," Stumpf said.

From the Tartan perspective, coach Larry Fronczak was not too upset with his charges. He stated, "We got our first win in the conference in a couple of years at our No. 1 singles. I'm pleased about that. Ashley Howard at first singles won 7-5, 7-5.

"And then our sisters [Sakinah and Dariyah Muhammed] also won today in two sets. Then in a couple of other spots we did well, and those sets were up and down and up and down. So actually we won in two matches and that bodes pretty well for us. We're beginning to come around a bit, so that's good."

At No. 1 singles, North's Taylor Thiets was stopped by the Titans' Ashley Howard in two tough, hard-fought sets of 7-5.

At No 2 singles, North's Allison Ly was victorious over Sierra Karbo in sets of 6-4, 6-3.

In No. 3 singles play, the Polars' Bobbie Morelli gained the upper hand over the Titans' Paige Pariseau-Day in sets of 6-0, 6-1, and at fourth singles North's Sarah Warner triumphed over Tartan's Shelby Domagala in sets of 6-1, 6-3.

In the first doubles match, the North duo of Sami Bonn and Charlotte Zangs put handcuffs on Jordan Jackson and Cali Pearcy in sets of 6-3, 6-4.

At second doubles it was North players Jenny Ulven and Lucy Smith who stopped Maddie Ciolkosz and Gabby Bjellos is sets of 6-2, 6-3.

Then at third doubles the Muhammad sisters — both juniors at Tartan — were able to overtake North's duo of Jessie Farah and Tiffany Ulven in sets of 6-4, 6-3.
