Rosetown legion baseball squad headed to playoffs

The American Legion baseball season in Minnesota has reached the post-season. Of the 135 Division I teams in the state, 16 will advance to next week’s state tournament and 15 of those berths are being decided on fields throughout the state this week.

Rosetown plays in Sub-State 7 and opens the post-season on Tuesday. The seventh-seeded Rockets take on second-seeded Fridley Gold Eagle, which is made up mostly of players who attend Totino-Grace High School.

The Rosetown/Fridley winner advances to Wednesday’s second round and plays at 2 p.m. against either Hamline Red, the sixth seed, or the North St. Paul 39ers, the third seed. The losers of the two aforementioned games will meet Wednesday at 11 a.m. in an elimination game.

Rosetown is one of four teams from the Fourth District in Sub-State 7. The Rockets went 0-7 against the other three Fourth District teams (Hamline Purple, Hamline Red, North St. Paul 39ers) during the regular season.

Also in Sub-State 7 are Mahtomedi, West St. Paul and Oakdale from the Third District and Fridley Gold Eagle, which is from the 10th District.

Rosetown finished the Fourth District season 4-10 and the teams that the Rockets beat play in a different sub-state. Rosetown beat White Bear twice and North St. Paul Cavalry and Tri-City Maroon once each. All three of those teams compete in Sub-State 8.

Outside of district play, Rosetown played in a trio of weekend tournaments and finished with a combined record of 4-9. The Rockets beat Duluth Lakeview and Eagan in the Moose Country Challenge, LeSueur-Henderson in the Upper Midwest Classic in New Ulm and Chaska in the Gopher Classic in Bloomington.

Hamline Purple, the Fourth District co-champion whose roster is made up of players from Cretin-Derham Hall High School, is the top seed in Sub-State 7 and faces eighth-seeded Oakdale in the first round on Tuesday. Fourth-seeded West St. Paul and fifth-seeded Mahtomedi also play Tuesday.

All games in the sub-state tournament are played at Kuenkel Field in North St. Paul. The tournament continues with three games on Thursday, two on Friday and as many as two on Saturday.

The 15 sub-state champions will converge on the southwest metro next week for the state tournament. The main field for the tournament is the ballpark at Chanhassen High School and games will also be played at Chaska Athletic Park, Round Lake Stadium in Eden Prairie and Braemar Field in Edina.

As the host team, Chanhassen earns an automatic berth to the tournament.

The state champion and the state runner-up advance to the Central Plains regional in Bismarck, North Dakota, with the games being played Aug. 5-9.

The eight regional champions then play for the national title in the American Legion World Series Aug., 13-18 in Shelby, North Carolina. All world series games will be shown on ESPN3 and the championship game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
