Prep baseball playoffs begin

The high school baseball post-season began late last week with the teams from Roseville Area High School and Concordia Academy trying to reach the double-elimination portion of their respective section tournaments.

Roseville (9-11) struggled to find victories in the final week of the regular season, but still finished high enough to earn a home game in the first round of the Section 4AAA playoffs. The Raiders, seeded eighth, hosted ninth-seeded South St. Paul in the first round on May 21.

The winner advanced to the second round on May 23 at McKnight Field in North St. Paul.

The Raiders were a respectable 7-3 in the first half of the regular season. Among Roseville’s wins in that stretch were victories over Woodbury, the fourth seed in Section 4AAA, and Cretin-Derham Hall, the third seed. Roseville also played a close game against defending state champion Mounds View.

Things were more difficult for Roseville in the second half of the season as it won just twice.

Concordia Academy (9-10), the 10th seed, opened the Section 4AA playoffs on May 22 at seventh-seeded St. Paul Como Park. The winner advances to Tuesday’s second round.

The Beacons entered the final week of the regular season a game above .500 but lost three of their final four games. Their best stretch of baseball came in late April and early May when they lost just once in a stretch of seven games. One of the wins in that stretch came against St. Croix Lutheran, which in the fifth seed in Section 4AA.

Note: Roseville and Concordia Academy’s playoff games last week were played past the deadline for this edition of the Review. Deadlines were earlier than normal because of the Memorial Day holiday.
