Maplewood’s Jim Antonen leaving; Chuck Ahl made manager

After 47 years in public service, Maplewood City Manager Jim Antonen is ready for a break. Earlier this year, a notable birthday prompted him to make the decision to retire.
“I turned 65 earlier this year, which is retirement age. That’s really the reason -- it’s time,” Antonen said. “I’ll be wintering in California, where I have a home, and summering in Minnesota. I have a townhome here and a home there in California.”

Highway 36 in Lake Elmo reduced to single lane overnight through mid-June

Overnight motorists in both directions on Highway 36 between Interstate 694 and one mile east of Demontreville Trail in Lake Elmo can expect delays until mid-June as the Minnesota Department of Transportation continues to work on shoulder removal and begins construction of a “J-turn” lane.

Oakdale to provide contract fire services to Landfall

Oakdale has reached an agreement with Landfall to provide fire services for the small community.
At the May 14 Oakdale City Council meeting, Fire Chief Jeff Anderson told council members that the two cities had reached an agreement that works well for Oakdale. The council voted unanimously to approve the contract agreement, which will begin in June and last through the end of 2017.

East Side home sales ramp up

East Side home prices are up significantly from a year ago, according to a report from the St. Paul Area Association of Realtors.
The year-to-date median home sale in Payne-Phalen is up 27 percent; the upper East Side is up 22.5 percent, and Dayton’s Bluff is up 44.5 percent, according to market data from the association.

Neighborhood market’s licenses get pulled

The Burr Street Grocery has vexed some nearby residents for years.
The store at 962 Burr St. has “been notorious over the years as a source of nuisance,” said Leslie McMurray, executive director of the District 5 Planning Council.

Additional details surface in Kira Steger case

An amended complaint was submitted to District Judge Leonardo Castro on May 14 in the murder trial of East Side resident Jeffery Trevino.
The complaint reveals numerous new pieces of evidence and information that investigators have gathered since March, when the Ramsey County attorney's office last submitted an amended complaint.
