Each week the staff at the Roseville Library answers more than 2,500 questions on every subject under the sun. Here are some of the most interesting ones they’ve gotten lately.
Q. I know people don’t get married as young as they used to, but how many people never get married at all? What percentage of the population is single?
A. The single life continues to be an increasingly popular lifestyle choice among Americans. According the U.S. Census, 44.1 percent of people over 18 were single in 2012. Sixty-two percent of those singles had never been married; another 24 percent were divorced, and 14 percent were widowed.
We’ve seen an astonishing rise in the rate of people living alone. Well over one out of four households in 2012 had only one inhabitant. In 1970, by the contrast, only 17 percent of Americans lived alone.
