Looking for a new brunch standby? This dish can be made ahead of time and refrigerated before baking — and puts other “breakfast strata” in the shade.
2 cups cubed ham
1 package (10 oz.) frozen chopped broccoli, thawed and drained
2 cups (8 oz.) shredded cheddar cheese
1 package (6 oz.) seasoned croutons
4 eggs, beaten
2 cups milk
1 cup Miracle Whip dressing
2 Tablespoons flour
2 teaspoons dry mustard
2 teaspoons dried basil leaves
Preheat oven to 375° F.
Mix ham, broccoli, cheese and croutons. Spoon into a 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Mix remaining ingredients. Pour over ham mixture; cover. Refrigerate 1 hour or overnight.
Bake uncovered, 1 hour or until thoroughly heated.
Makes 8 servings.
A great Minnesota hot dish
As a working mom who’s always on the go, Deborah Jarvis of Cottage Grove says, “I’m drawn to recipes with ingredients that I am likely to have in my refrigerator or cupboard, and with just a little interesting twist.”
That’s what she found in this year’s third-place recipe, Crowd-Pleasing Creamy Casserole.
She adds, “I don’t get into recipes that send me off to the store to buy fancy ingredients that I only use a small amount of and then they gather dust on a kitchen shelf.”
What’s nice about this casserole, she says, is it doesn’t take too much time to prepare and it has a different flavor from most egg stratas. “And if you’re going to a holiday potluck, it travels well. The guests will love it,” Deborah says.
She says it’s the Miracle Whip that gives the dish “just a tiny zip.”
When asked how she acquired the recipe, she admits she isn’t quite sure where it came from; she enjoys collecting recipes and has accumulated many over the years.
She laughs as she adds, “I don’t know how well this recipe would go over in southern Florida, but in Minnesota it certainly classifies as a great hot dish!”
