The summer in review: Vol. 2



According to the calendar above my desk, summer technically lasts about 13 weeks. Which is why my tally of 15 summer movies viewed is either an impressive achievement or a depressing statistic, depending on how you look at it.

Who knew dents and duct tape were desirable?

I drive an old minivan with more character than market appeal: a 1995 Quest with a dented rear right taillight from an unfortunate incident involving backing into a parked vehicle, a scraped left side from a poorly placed light post and 169,000 miles of experience.

District 622 issues financial report

The North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District is grateful that the Minnesota State Legislature increased school funding. For two years, school funding has remained flat, while costs have continued to rise.

Many of the dogwoods, hazelnuts and white oaks along the south end of Hadley Avenue stand only a few feet high, some of them so small that their leaves barely extend beyond the top of their protective green tubes.

Blood supply needs boost

Hurricane Katrina has disrupted blood collections in parts of the South. The Red Cross urges donors to give blood this month to help keep inventories at a safe level.

All donations are appreciated, but Type O blood, which is at less than a day’s supply, is especially needed.

I’ve watched in horror and wondered how displaced storm victims will ever rebuild their lives. Scattered across the country and separated from loved ones and friends, they have lost everything that gave their lives meaning and purpose.
