Detour routes announced

I-35E detour route The detour route for the northbound Interstate 35E exit to Maryland includes getting off at Wheelock Parkway/Larpenteur Avenue and then following that to southbound I-35E, and following that to the southbound Maryland exit. (submitted graphic)

If it’s not one thing, it’s the other, and sometimes it’s both.
That’s the case here, where two construction projects will be taking place along Maryland Avenue: freeway work at Interstate 35E and Maryland; and a reworking of the Maryland-Arkwright intersection.
Starting Monday, Sept. 9, Maryland Avenue will be closed between Westminster Street and Arkwright Street. Traffic will be diverted a block to the north onto East Hawthorne Avenue. The block will be closed for an estimated three weeks.

New Johnson High School wrestling captain: a success story

Coming into Johnson High School, Dwayne Williams looked to be a kid full of distractions.
His grades weren’t great. He was hanging around with the wrong kids -- kids who drank and smoked. He even got into some trouble at school.
Living on the lower East Side without a father around, in a full household with five siblings and his mother, he was a bit directionless.

Bruentrup Heritage Farm to get new turf parking lot

“Grassprotecta,” a thick polyethlene mesh, “reinforces grassed surfaces prone to wear, rutting and smearing.” It’s also expected to prevent the usual water runoff and pollution seen from paved parking lots. (submitted photo)

A place for agricultural history is also going to be a place to see new environmental technology, as the overflow parking lot at Bruentrup Heritage Farm gets some 21st-century help.
The 2.36-acre grass lawn, put into use for parking when the farm at 2170 E. County Road D in Maplewood hosts big events, is going to look much the same, but will be more stable, thanks to a grant from the Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District.

“Anything we can do to improve or increase our services for our students and parents is a good thing,” Superintendent Corey Lunn said. “When we’re downsizing ... it’s good to have a service that allows parents to not depend on staff as much.”
