Sun Ray Library reopens - photos

The Sun Ray Library at 2105 Wilson Ave. reopened Saturday, Nov. 8 after undergoing a $5.5 million renovation the past 11 months.
Kicking off the festivities were the Harding High Drum Line members, who joined dignitaries and patrons for the first glimpses of the remodeled space.
The renovated building has more windows, an extra 2,500 square feet of indoor space for the public, an outdoor reading garden, a quiet reading room, study and meeting rooms, and a 900 square-foot community room with after-hours access.

Capitol Christmas Tree stops in West St. Paul - photos

West St. Paul was one stop along the route of a 100-foot long truck lugging a white spruce from the Chippewa National Forest to Washington, D.C. For 50 years, a Christmas tree has been erected on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol. This year, the U.S. Forest Service, Choose Outdoors and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe are providing the evergreen. Garlough Environmental Magnet School in West St. Paul hosted the event Nov. 6 where kids could see the tree in the truck and write a message to the Capitol. photos by Linda E. Andersen/Review

Rose Ovalumination - photos

The Roseville Oval, the largest sheet of refrigerated ice in North America, held a grand opening lighting ceremony for OVALumination on Friday, Nov. 7. The 2nd annual OVALumination kicked off with the lighting of 106 arborvitae and evergreen trees decorated with 66,000 lights. Skaters of all ages and abilities had a grand time enjoying the outdoors, marveling at the holiday lights and listening to Ralphie, a character from the Ordway's production of "A Christmas Story," sing songs from the show.

Launching pumpkins in South St. Paul - photos

The South St. Paul Mayor’s Youth Task Force ended this year’s Halloween festivities with a special pumpkin recycling event, where jack-o’-lanterns were launched from a catapult to their demise on the South St. Paul High School football practice field on Nov. 1.

Gordy Carlson, a World War II veteran and Oakdale resident, was one of a group to receive a Fort Snelling National Cemetery Memorial Rifle Squad Lifetime Achievement award. Carlson has volunteered 9,000 hours over 30 years with the rifle squad. Carlson has also volunteered 60 years at the VA Hospital, 22 years as representative, and and has helped with recreation programs from Bingo to bowling. (submitted photos
