GALLERY: Philando Castile Memorial, June 22, 2017

The morning of June 22, about 20 students from Fairview Alternative High School in Roseville walked down to the area of Larpenteur Avenue and Fry Street in Falcon Heights, where Philando Castile was shot and killed during a traffic stop last July 6. The students visited a memorial site commemorating Castile, and brought along painted kindness rocks to contribute to the memorial’s many flowers and signs. Laura Freer, the school’s principal, was there with the students and said they were there “to process the verdict.” She said other Roseville schools were also working on ways for students to process the June 16 news that police officer Jeronimo Yanez was acquitted of all charges related to killing Castile.  Photos by Jesse Poole

110th annual Harvest Festival and Parade

2016 was the 110th annual Harvest Festival, which took place Sept. 16-18. The parade was on Saturday, Sept. 17, with activities, dancing and food afterwards. While the day started out cloudy and chilly, it soon warmed up and got people out and about. After the parade, Plaza del Sol held a dance in the street to the north of their building. Dancers from Indigenous Roots, a local organization that promotes and teaches about the Mexica-Nahua culture, performed for onlookers.

The East Side Salavtion Army girls basketball team dribbled their way down Payne Avenue and the East Side Judo club threw candy.

Ted Hecht, a long-time East Side resident and community volunteer, was the Harvest Festival’s grand marshal. The Vulcan Krewe, part of the St. Paul Winter Carnival, joined the Harvest Festival Parade along with the St. Paul Clown Club.

The Farnsworth marching band always leaves a big impression on parade spectators.

The parade also included Mexican Chinelos, which are traditional costumed dancers from the Mexican state of Morelos.
