Little fair, big fun

Marjorie Otto/Review

Olena Brown, 3, gave Silly Miss Tilly, a ballon artist, a big high five and thank you after receiving a balloon twisted into a flower. Her 7-year-old brother, Wyatt, had a turtle made made for him. The Ramsey County Fair, located at 2020 White Bear Ave., in Maplewood, took place July 12-16. A popular exhibit for fairgoers was petting and feeding animals at the petting zoo. The exhibit included llamas, donkeys, yaks, zebus, fainting goats, pygmy goats and many other types of unique farm animals. A recurring act each year, the Mitchell Showboat Marionettes, put on a show called the “Haybale Hullabaloo,” which included singing cows and dancing chickens.  William Turnball, 10, was wowed when he looked up and saw Silly Miss Tilly had created an alien hat. While she created the hat, William wowed Miss Tilly by balancing a balloon on his nose. In the midway, parents watched their kids as they went down slides, ran around in giant bubbles and rode the merry-go-round.

Oakdale Summerfest - a screaming success.

Oakdale Summerfest - a screaming success.

The weekend of Summerfest, Oakdale’s Richard Walton Park was full of families sampling fair foods and taking a spin on some of the carnival rides.

One of the contestants in 3rd Lair’s Skateboard contest performed a feeble grind as a storm moved in.

Summerfest visitors saw some rain over the weekend, but nothing that dampened the spirit of celebration.

The Zipper was a popular carnival ride at Summerfest, and had a particularly long line June 23 as visitors tried to make the most of their time before the rain arrived.
