Titans out to have fun at girls hockey

The Tartan girls hockey program is in a development stage. This season, the Titans have gone to a half junior varsity and half varsity schedule

When Tartan plays a team from the Classic Suburban Conference, they will play the JV team from the opposition.

Combined with their conference junior varsity schedule, when the Titans go up against a non-conference foe, they will play the varsity from their opposition.

“We decided that would be the best way to go,” Tartan head girls hockey coach Glen Anderson said. “We have a lot of inexperienced girls and we will develop what talent we have. We are good in goaltending and have some excellent team speed.”

Looking at development, Tartan this year will put on the ice a team made up of four eighth graders, four ninth graders, eight sophomores, two juniors and just one senior.

“We’re going to improve and have a lot of fun in the process,” coach Anderson smiled.

Leading the Titans into the puck wars this season will be tri-captains, Janelle Hayes, Haley Thomas and Gabby Mariano.

Hayes is a senior winger, while Mariano is a junior forward and Thomas is a sophomore defender.

Behind the captains, the Titans will be bolstered by a pair of sophomores in the persons of goalie Heather Redcliff and defender Tori Phillips.

A trio of eighth grade hopefuls who are expected to see extended action are center Kelly Kurz and wingers Tara Korf and Emily Kleidon.

Anderson, who was assistant last season to retired Larry Fronczak, took a look at the CSC race and pegged South St. Paul, North and Hill-Murray as favorites to capture the conference crown.

Assisting Anderson will be Cora Reeves and John Thomas.

The Titans have already begun the season. They played a game Nov. 15 when they traveled to meet Minnehaha Academy.

Tartan scored the first goal of the season, but ended up on the wrong side of a 2-1 count that was settled in overtime.
