St. Anthony opens post-season on Thursday
The St. Anthony Village High School fastpitch softball team begins the post-season this week. The Huskies, who won the Tri-Metro Conference championship outright, are the top seed in Section 4AA and play their first playoff game on Thursday.
St. Anthony (15-3) is hosting 16th-seeded Minneapolis Edison at 4 p.m. at Central Park. Edison enters the game with just one victory this spring. The Huskies head to the post-season ranked seventh in the state in Class AA by the Minnesota High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association.
The second round is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. St. Anthony would host either eighth-seeded St. Paul Humboldt or ninth-seeded DeLaSalle.The top six seeds in Section 4AA are Tri-Metro Conference teams. Following St. Anthony is Visitation at No. 2. St. Paul Academy is third with St. Croix Lutheran, Concordia Academy and Minnehaha Academy at four, five and six, respectively.
The highest-seeded non-Tri-Metro team is No. 7 Holy Angels, which is a member of the Missota Conference. Holy Angels is the only Missota softball team that doesn't play in Class AAA.The Section 4AA playoffs resume next week on May 22 and will be down to two teams following games on May 24.
The section final is set for May 29 at Hamline University at 5 p.m. A second championship game, if necessary, will be played May 31 at Hamline.In addition to the playoffs, St. Anthony is squeezing in a regular-season game on May 21 at home. Sauk Rapids-Rice is coming to Central Park for a 7 p.m. game, a makeup of the third-place game of the Sauk Rapids-Rice tournament which was rained out back May 5.
In that tournament, St. Anthony opened the day with a 9-1 win over St. Cloud Tech and then lost 5-0 to Champlin Park in the semifinals. Sauk Rapids beat Virginia in the first round and then lost to Rogers in the semifinals.
