Section 4AAA baseball playoffs: Roseville tops Mounds View
Next up: No. 1.
With its 5-1 victory over Mounds View on Thursday at Midway Stadium, the Roseville Area High School baseball team has knocked off two of the top three seeds in Section 4AAA. The Raiders get their shot at the top seed on Saturday.
Roseville never trailed against Mounds View and used solid defense to limit the Mustangs' offense. The Raiders turned three double plays and got a spectacular diving catch from right fielder Andrew Colvard to save a run.
Roseville struck first by putting up a run in the top of the first off Mounds View starting pitcher Max Knutson. Sam Podobinski drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on Tim Truninger's single to right field. Zach Hayes drove in Podobinksi with a sacrifice fly.
Mounds View drew even at 1-1 as Lars Anderson singled to right field with two outs in the third inning to score Ryan Vijums from second base. Vijums led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on Quinn Madsen's sacrifice bunt.
Roseville retook the lead for good with four runs in the top of the fifth.
Tim Truninger doubled home a pair of runs, Dan Busch singled home another and yet another came across on a wild pitch.
Next up for Roseville is a 7 p.m. game on Saturday at Midway Stadium against top-seeded Hill-Murray. Mounds View takes on Stillwater in an elimination game at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
This was the third meeting of the season between the two teams, who split a pair of conference regular season games by winning on the other's home field. Roseville beat Mounds View 6-2 on April 18 and the Mustangs returned the favor 7-2 on May 9.
Mounds View reached Thursday's game via a 7-2 victory over 11th-seeded Woodbury on Tuesday. Roseville is 2-0 in the post-season with wins over White Bear Lake and second-seeded Cretin-Derham Hall thus far.In the first game on Thursday, top-seeded Hill-Murray took care of fifth-seeded Stillwater 4-2.
