Roseville well-represented at state track and field meet

There will be plenty of Roseville Area High School athletes running, jumping and throwing at Hamline University in St. Paul later this week. The Raiders' track and field teams combined for 11 entries into the Class AA state meet, which takes place Friday and Saturday.

Roseville's boys squad has seven entries in the meet and two athletes are set to compete in three events each. Junior DeAntre Smith heads to state in the high jump, long jump and 4x400-meter relay while fellow 11th grader Elvis Barclay qualified for state in the 100 and 200-meter events and the 4x100-meter relay.

Smith won both jumping events at the Section 4AA meet last week and helped the 4x400 relay team take second. Barclay helped the 4x100 team finish second, he was also runner-up in the 200 and qualified for state on standard in the 100.

Running with Barclay on the 4x100 team are Barron Taylor, Tevin Stevens and David Stampley. Rounding out the rest of the 4x400 squad are Kevin Brooks, Dan Wahlstedt and Emeche Wells.

Wells, a senior, is also a multi-event state entrant. In addition to qualifying in the 4x400, Wells also punched his ticket to state in the 110-meter hurdles by winning the section title in the event.

On the girls' side of the ledger, Roseville is sending seven athletes, who will compete in one event each at state.

Juniors Sammie Nielsen and Allison Cordes both won section championships last week. Nielsen ran first in the 800 meters while Cordes topped the field in the 3,200 meters.

Roseville clinched two more state entries via runner-up finishes at the section meet. The first was in the 4x100-meter relay as the quartet of Emma Reasoner, Emily Edman, Taylor Lewis and Velaina Pierce finished second to Stillwater. Monica Burich is also headed to the state meet after she took second place in the discus.

The Class AA state meet starts at 9 a.m. both Friday and Saturday. Burich and Cordes will compete in their respective events only on Friday while the rest of Roseville's contingent will run in the preliminaries of their events on Friday and return on Saturday if they qualify for the finals.

Conference meet

A week prior to the section meet, Roseville competed in the Suburban East Conference championship meet and some familiar names captured five event titles for the Raiders.

Smith won SEC crowns in both the high jump and long jump and Barclay took home the first-place medal in the 200.

For the girls, Pierce won the 100 meters and Nielsen captured top honors in the 1,600 meters.
