The members of the South St. Paul Board of Education and audience recited the Pledge of Allegiance. The Board of Education celebrated the following Quality-in-Action items: Kaposia Education Center PYP Coordinator Ryan Higbea shared the conceptual changes to the Program of Inquiry, student learning, and teacher practices. In response to Kaposia’s Matters to be Addressed from their 2013 IB evaluation report, the majority of Kaposia’s staff took part in concept teaching training during opening days 2013. Community Preschool will be holding their Open House on Thursday, January 30 at Salem Hills and Hilltop Elementary from 5:30 – 7 p.m. Registration for the 2014-15 school year will begin on Thursday, February 13th. More preschool options will be available at Salem Hills at the new Inver Grove Heights Early Learning Center site. 2. Links to Literacy is partnering with 360 Communities and Child Care Aware and has been approved to train state curriculum in the areas of safety, Early Childhood standards, curriculum, assessment, and child development. 3. Simley Theatre Guild will be performing the One-Act play, Rip Van Winkle and Drama Chorus on January 30 at 7 p.m.; and January 31 and February 1 at 7:30 p.m. 4. IGH Middle School students are invited to register for the “Make a Difference Fridays”, once per month before school, to make sandwiches for the homeless. Other activities such as Yoga, Cartoon Drawing, Open Gym and Student Academic Support Time are also planned each morning before school from 7:05 – 7:35 a.m. 5. Salem Hills Kids’ Choice has participated in the "Shop, Ship and Share" a service learning project for their fifth year. On March 7th, the VFW will come out to Salem Hills to thank the kids for their contribution. 6. Spring break non-school days are coming up and the theme this year is “Passport to Spring.” Students will travel to a different destination each day. Field trips will include the Children’s Museum, Feed My Starving Children, and swimming. 7. Kids’ Choice is in the midst of the accreditation process holding meetings with stakeholders, parents, principals, and staff. They are evaluating the survey results sent out to parents and will be developing an action plan based on those results to make necessary improvements and changes to the program. 8. The district school calendar committee has been meeting and the teaching staff will be reviewing two potential calendar options for the 2014-2015 school year. Those will come to the board for board approval at an upcoming meeting. 9. This year is a bonding year down at the capital. Inver Hills community College will pursue bonding project dollars in 2016 from the Minnesota Legislature. B. Director of Business Service’s Report 1. Mr. Mutzenberger presented to the Board the monthly finance report. Expenditures are comparable to last year. C. Committee Reports 1. Standing Committees a. Facilities: The Committee was updated that the overall design of the track and field needed for bid specs is nearing completion. The Committee committed to have the water and sewer lines for a future concession stand included as an alternate in bid package 1 – athletic fields. The design of the performing arts and office space is moving forward, the overall layout of the performing arts center on the site was approved. The Committee briefly reviewed the Simley High School projects that will be included in the bid package 5b in the second phase. The bond budget funds for those projects will remain intact for those projects. The Salem Hills project is on budget, the Committee will need to commit to the design of the new media space, the remodeled IMC space, and the office space soon as these projects will need to be drawn up and detailed for approvals and bids to begin June 2014. b. Finance: Mr. Mutzenberger provided the Committee with a negotiations and P-Card Services update. Penny Kaszas presented an overview of the District’s 2015-2017 Integration Plan. Mr. Mutzenberger also provided an update regarding the sale of bonds and budget projections for the 2014-2015 fiscal year. c. Personnel: The Committee received an update on tentative agreements and negotiations. The Committee discussed requests to add a Director of Human Resources position, an EL teacher position, and an additional 0.4 FTE AVID teacher. Mr. Mutzenberger provided the Committee with budget projections for the 2014-2015 fiscal year and a general discussion was held regarding the benefit structures of the District. VI.
