Plenty of Mustangs at state swim meet

The Mounds View High School girls swimming and diving team has five entries in this week's Class AA state meet held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Swimming in individual events are McClaren Curphy and Maya Loewen. Curphy, a freshman, made state in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.56 seconds, which placed her third at the Section 5AA but was faster than the state cut time. Loewen, a sophomore, placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.41. As the runner-up, she qualified for state automatically but her time was also faster the state standard. Junior diver Kiley Kuether clinched a spot at state by finishing third in the section competition.

Mounds View's other two state entries are both relays. The foursome of Curphy, Loewen, sophomore Sara Nelson and junior Emily Fleming teamed up to finish second in the 200-yard medley relay and qualify for state.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Nelson, junior Maggie Lemere, Fleming and junior Ellie Sachse wound up third at sections but their time of 1:40.56 beat the state cut time and got them to state.

The Class AA state meet sessions start each night at 6 p.m. The diving preliminaries take place Thursday and the swimming prelims are on Friday. The finals for all events will be contested on Saturday.
