MVHS girls clinch conference hockey crown

The Mounds View High School girls hockey team wrapped up the Suburban East Conference championship last week with a pair of victories. The wins also kept the Mustangs on track for an unbeaten regular-season.

Mounds View technically clinched the SEC title last Thursday without playing a game that day. Roseville's 1-0 loss to Cretin-Derham Hall that evening gave Mounds View the title.

The Mustangs pulled within one win or one Roseville loss of the championship by knocking off Cretin 4-3 in overtime on Jan. 22. Mounds View trailed by a goal two different times and took its first lead four and a half minutes into the third period on a goal by Kathryn Larson.

Cretin tied it with 6:30 left in the third but Larson sent the Mounds View faithful home in a good mood when she netted the game-winner with 1:05 left in overtime. Larson finished with the hat trick while Bella Sutton added a goal and assists on all three of Larson's tallies.

Roseville also won that night but dropped a 1-0 decision to Cretin two days later to give Mounds View an insurmountable lead in the conference standings.

Mounds View closed out the week on Saturday with another overtime thriller, this time against Hastings. Lauren Klein gave the Mustangs the 3-2 victory with a power-play goal with 1:50 left in the extra session.

Mounds View needed a rally just to get to overtime as Hastings led 2-0 midway through the second period. Elli Marvin got the Mustangs' comeback started with a power-play goal later in the second. Sydney Brodt tied it at 2-2 in the third period.

The Hastings victory ran Mounds View winning streak to 11 games, the second time this season that has happened. The Mustangs opened the season by winning its first 11 games before playing to a 2-2 tie against White Bear Lake on Dec. 22. After a few days off for Christmas, Mounds View went to work on a new streak by winning three games at the Centennial Holiday Tournament.

With the No. 1 seed in the upcoming section playoffs all but sewn up, there's not a whole lot of incentive for the Mustangs in their final two regular-season games. They can use Tuesday's home game against White Bear Lake and Saturday's road tilt against Roseville as tune-ups for the post-season.

The Section 5AA playoffs, which take place at Roseville Arena, start Feb. 6 with the 8/9 play-in game. Mounds View will play its first playoff game on Feb. 9.

Mounds View boys

The Mustangs have some work to do to give the school a sweep of the conference hockey titles. Mounds View enters its final five Suburban East Conference games of the season two points behind conference-leading Cretin-Derham Hall.

Mounds View fell out of first place with its 4-3 loss to White Bear Lake on Saturday night. Coupled with Cretin's victory over Woodbury that night, the Mustangs dropped to second place.

The Mustangs have two games on the docket this week, starting Thursday at home against Woodbury. Mounds View beat the Royals 3-2 on Jan. 5.

Mounds View heads to Stillwater on Saturday looking to put together a better showing than the one it had in a 9-1 loss to the Ponies on Jan. 3.
