Mounds View's McDaniels reaches milestone

A bright spot in the Mounds View High School girls basketball team's loss to Woodbury last Friday was the personal achievement of one of the team's seniors. Katie McDaniels joined Mounds View's 1,000-point club.

McDaniels, who finished with 15 points, is Mounds View's leading scorer with a per-game average of 16.8 points. She has scored 20 or more points in a game seven times, including 20 against Forest Lake on Jan. 22.

McDaniels' top two scoring games this season came in back-to-back victories over Cretin-Derham Hall on Jan. 8 and East Ridge on Jan. 11. McDaniels scored a season-high 27 against Cretin and bettered that total by one point against East Ridge.

Another high-scoring stretch of games for McDaniels came in mid-December as she eclipsed the 20-point mark three straight times, starting Dec. 14 against Woodbury when she scored 26. Four days later against Hastings McDaniels hit for 21 and she added 25 against Roseville on Jan. 21.

As a team, Mounds View (10-9 overall) has struggled to string victories together. After a 1-1 start to the season, the Mustangs won five of six but then dropped three in a row. They bounced back to take four of six but lost both of their games last week to fall in the bottom half of the Suburban East Conference standings.

Mounds View enters the final seven games of the regular season with a pair on the schedule this week. The Mustangs host last-place Hastings, which has won only three games all season, on Tuesday and then travel to fourth-ranked Roseville on Friday. Mounds View beat Hastings by 31 and lost by five to Roseville in its first meetings with those teams this season.

Since winning four in a row in mid-December, the Mustangs have alternated wins and losses through their last 11 games. If that pattern continues, Tuesday will be a good night for Mounds View and Friday might not be.

Mounds View travels to Hastings on Tuesday to battle the Raiders, a team that has won just two games so far this season. The Mustangs topped Hastings by 14 on Dec. 18.

Friday's game is at home against Suburban East Conference-leading and 10th-ranked Roseville. The Raiders, following a two-game losing streak earlier this month, dropped to 10th in the Class AAAA state rankings after ascending as high as No. 3. Roseville beat the Mustangs by 26 back in December.

Mounds View, which it has done often, went 1-1 last week with a win over Forest Lake on Jan. 22 and a loss to ninth-ranked Woodbury on Friday. Ben Spencer and Ryan Kaczynski led the Mustangs with 11 points each against Forest Lake. Ten different Mounds View players scored in the game.

Against Woodbury, Mounds View led by one at halftime but couldn't hold off the Royals in the second half. Spencer paced the Mustangs with 18 points and was joined in double figures by Tim Hanson, who added 17, and Kaczynski, who had a dozen. Woodbury's Renard Suggs led all scorers with 26.
