Mounds View's Brills chasing state tennis title
Mounds View High School junior Summer Brills is one of four players still in contention for the Class AA singles state championship. Brills, the No. 1 seed in the competition, won her first two matches on Thursday to advance to Friday's semifinals.
Brills, ranked No. 2 in the state all season, defeated Bemidji senior Jessica Solberg 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and Eagan senior Danielle Donahue 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Of the four players who were seeded for the tournament, Brills was the only one to last past the first round.
Next up for Brills is an 8 a.m. semifinal on Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center against Andover senior Faith Lee. Lee also won twice on Thursday, including a three-set win over fourth-seeded Kelly Yang of Wayzata.
The other two semifinalists are Stillwater senior Natalie Phippen and Edina seventh-grader Sophia Reddy. One of Phippen's wins on Thursday was a three-set victory over second-seeded Hayley Haakenstad of Chanhassen while Reddy opened the tournament with a straight-sets win over third-seeded Kylie Boyer of Rochester Mayo.
The two semifinal winners meet for the state singles title on Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Baseline.
Brills is attempting to win Mounds View's first girls tennis state title.
