Mounds View boys, Irondale girls in section finals

The Mounds View boys and Irondale girls soccer teams have big plans for Tuesday night. Both are playing that night for a spot in the state tournament.

Mounds View boys

Mounds View clinched its spot in the Section 5AA championship match by beating Centennial 2-0 on Thursday at Mustang Stadium. The Mustangs scored in the first five minutes of each half and made that lead stand.

Ryan Elvidge got Mounds View on the board with a goal 4:32 into the first half.

Elvidge had a hand in Mounds View's goal in the second half as well. He sent a pass through the box and eventually the ball found its way onto the foot of Rodrigo Talledo, who buried the shot from the left of the goal. John Archbold was also instrumental on the goal as he poked the ball ahead through the legs of a Centennial player to Elvidge. Archbold made a beeline for the net after the pass but was unable to get a piece of Elvidge's centering attempt but it worked out as Talledo was ready.

Centennial appeared to pull within a goal midway through the second half as a ball banged off the crossbar behind Mounds View keeper Jake Bartel and then off a Cougar into the net. The goal was waived off because of a handball violation.

Mounds View (15-2) will travel to top-seeded and second-ranked Champlin Park (15-0-1) on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. showdown. The Rebels reached the finals by beating fourth-seeded Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village 1-0 on Thursday.

Mounds View and Champlin Park met in the regular season and the Rebels won that game 3-0.
