Irondale girls hockey blanks White Bear Lake in season opener
Irondale High School girls hockey head coach Tom Rodefeld admitted that he didn't know what to expect from his team in its season opener Tuesday night against White Bear Lake. The Knights had enough turnover from last year's team to raise a few questions.
Rodefeld got some answers to those questions as Irondale blanked the Bears 3-0 at the Vadnais Sports Center.
Offensively, Irondale spent plenty of time in White Bear Lake's zone and got goals from freshman Sena Hanson and junior Alex Toupal.
Hanson opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game when she deflected a centering pass from freshman Maddie Hentges past White Bear Lake goaltender Angela Hall.
Goal No. 2 for Hanson came late in the third period on a breakaway after taking a pass from senior Jessica Mularie. Toupal closed out the scoring with a shorthanded empty-net goal in the final minute off a feed from junior Sam Donovan.
Defensively, Irondale held White Bear Lake to only seven shots on goal. Sophomore goalie Anna Pate stopped all seven of those shots for the shutout.
With game one under their belts, the Knights now get ready for a trip up north this weekend. Irondale plays at Grands Rapids/Greenway on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and at Hibbing/Chisholm on Saturday at 2 p.m.
