Irondale drops playoff opener
The Irondale High School football team saw its playoff losing streak extend with a 14-0 loss to Mahtomedi in the Section 4AAAAA quarterfinals on Tuesday. The Knights have lost their last four post-season games.
Mahtomedi, the fourth seed, scored single touchdowns in the first and fourth quarters while keeping Irondale off the scoreboard the entire night. The victory sends the Zephyrs to Saturday's semifinals, where they'll play at top-seeded and top-ranked Totino-Grace at 1 p.m.
The loss gives Irondale its third consecutive one-and-done playoffs. The Knights' most recent playoff victory was a quarterfinal win over North St. Paul in 2009. They went on to lose to Stillwater in the semifinals that year.
