Girls hockey: SLP/SAV wins playoff opener
The Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village girls hockey team got off to a fast start and held on at the end of its section playoff opener Wednesday in Roseville. The Panthers scored the first three goals of the game and then weathered Coon Rapids' third-period comeback attempt.
SLP/SAV won the game 4-2 to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals against top-seeded and third-ranked Mounds View.
On Wednesday, the Panthers (10-14-2) wasted little time as they opened the scoring just 3:20 into the game and added a second goal five minutes later. St. Anthony Village senior Kim Patterson then gave SLP/SAV a three-goal lead when she scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal with 2:06 left in the second period.Coon Rapids (5-21) tried to make it a game in third period with a pair of goals to trim the Panthers' lead to 3-2. SLP/SAV scored an empty-net goal with three seconds left to ice the game.
The victory snapped a four-game playoff losing streak for the Panthers, whose last playoff win came in the section play-in game in 2009. SLP/SAV beat Coon Rapids 7-1 in that game and went on to lose to top-seeded Centennial 2-1 in overtime in the quarterfinals.
