Beacons roll over Teddies
Concordia Academy took the mystery out of its Section 4AAA football quarterfinal early on Tuesday. The Beacons scored three first-quarter touchdowns and added two more in the second en route to a 49-18 thumping of Minneapolis Roosevelt.
With the victory, second-seeded Concordia advances to Saturday's semifinals and a 7 p.m. home game against third-seeded Cannon Falls. The Bombers also trounced a Minneapolis City Conference team, sixth-seeded Edison, on Tuesday 57-8.
Baeza Tensaie got Concordia rolling with a 58-yard touchdown run and Austin Moldenhauer added scoring runs of 24 and four yards later in the first quarter.
Roosevelt, the seventh seed, got on the board via an interception for a touchdown but Concordia answered with its own "pick six" by Eric Young. Tensaie then closed out the first-half scoring with a 6-yard touchdown run.
Concordia's defense put up another touchdown in the third quarter when Aaron Anderson returned a fumble 32 yards for a score. Moldenhauer then capped off the Beacons' scoring with an 8-yard touchdown run.
In Saturday's other semifinal, fourth-seeded Minnehaha Academy travels to top-seeded and third-ranked St. Croix Lutheran. Minnehaha beat fifth-seeded Columbia Heights 29-16 on Tuesday while St. Croix had a bye in the first round.
