Baseball playoffs: Mounds View eliminates Woodbury

The Mounds View High School baseball team advanced to the double-elimination portion of the Section 4AAA playoffs via its 7-2 victory over Woodbury on Monday at Midway Stadium.

Next up for the third-seeded Mustangs is a third-round contest on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against either seventh-seeded Roseville or second-seeded Cretin-Derham Hall. After falling behind by a pair in the second inning, Mounds View tied it up with two in the third and took the lead for good with three in the fourth. The Mustangs tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth.

Mounds View head coach Jon Nuss was happy to see the Mustangs' bats return.

"The bats showed up, which was nice," Nuss said. "Nice time for that as they've been a little absent lately." Sam Hentges led off the fourth with a home run down the right field line. Later in the inning, Quinn Madsen doubled in Ethan Decaster and Mitch Fredrickson, who got on base with back-to-back singles.

In the sixth, Max Knutson doubled to score Fredrickson and Ryan Vijums. Fredrickson got on base with a one-out single and Vijums was running for Sam Seiler, who reached on an error.

Through three innings, Mounds View and Woodbury were tied at 2-2. Woodbury scored two in the top of the second and Mounds View answered with a pair in the third.

Trailing 2-0, Fredrickson led off the third with a single, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Madsen's groundout. Ryan walked after Frederickson reached third and later scored on Max Knutson's base hit.

Matt Herringshaw started for Mounds View and went six innings. He gave up two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out four.

Nuss expects Knutson to start on Thursday with Herringshaw returning for the fourth round on Saturday.

This was the third meeting of the season between Mounds View and Woodbury. The Mustangs swept the season series over the Royals with an 11-6 win on April 23 and a 3-1 victory on May 14.

A section finalist a year ago, Mounds View is looking to return to the state tournament for the first time since back-to-back state trips in 1999 and 2000. In other Section 4AAA action Monday, top-seeded Hill-Murray survived Tartan's upset bid with a 2-1, 10-inning victory. In game two, fifth-seeded Stillwater eliminated fourth-seeded North St. Paul 10-6. Hill-Murray and Stillwater will meet at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Midway Stadium.
