Red Rock transit implementation approved


The Red Rock Corridor is a proposed 30-mile transitway that will run along Highway 61 and Interstate 94, connecting Hastings and the Union Depot in St. Paul. The Red Rock Corridor Commission chose the preferred route in January 2016, which includes deviations from Highway 61 in Newport, Cottage Grove, St. Paul Park and Hastings.

The St. Paul City Council approved the implementation plan for the Red Rock Southeast Corridor transit project during its Dec. 7 meeting.

East Side community shares a meal


The Intercultural Interfaith East Side Community Meal on Dec. 13 included food from local East Side restaurants such as Mañana Restaurant, Mai Vang’s Eggroll Queen egg rolls and Judy’s Kitchen. There was also food provided by Afro Deli, located in downtown St. Paul.

Following the election, community leaders want to unite the neighborhood

“We are a community that believes that the best part of our community is our diversity,” said St. Paul mayor Chris Coleman.

Sewer pipes near Lake Phalen being updated


The Metropolitan Council Environmental Services are rehabilitating sanitary sewer pipes that run under Phalen Regional Park and Phalen Golf Course. The project began in November and will be completed in Nov. 2017.

Phalen Rec Center’s refrigerated ice rink to get big upgrades


Phalen Recreation Center refrigerated ice rink is on tap to get a permanent cooling system. The new system, which will be installed during the summer of 2017, will consist of PVC pipes encased in concrete. The North Dale Recreation Center (pictured) had the same system installed this past summer.

Chester Sheehan was recently awarded the Roger Tetu Award by the Dayton’s Bluff Community Council because he offers “kindness without hesitation on a daily basis.” His neighbor, Jeanelle Foster, right, nominated him for the award.

Chester Sheehan, 74, is a shy man, but he doesn’t shy away when neighbors are in need.
