The New Brighton Water Department will begin flushing hydrants on Monday, Oct. 5 to remove iron from the water system. The flushing may temporarily cause some reddish-brown water for some city residents.

As a 13-year-old boy in Eritrea — a coastal African nation bordering Sudan, Ethiopia and the Red Sea — Frezgi Hiskias got caught in a thunderstorm while herding cattle back to his village.
As he and a friend sheltered under a tree, talking about how close they were to home — just a two-day journey — a bolt of lightning struck.
Back in May, members of New Brighton's League of Women Voters decided they wanted to learn more about surrounding cities' waste collection systems.
Months later, the league hosted a panel discussion on Sept. 17 at New Brighton City Hall about this very topic.
