Drop second game to Excelsior
The North St. Paul Post 39 American Legion baseball team got right into the summer baseball schedule when it opened the season with a 4-2 victory over Fridley Post 303 Gold.
Afterwards, 39ers coach Ron Adams said, "It was a well-played game. Obviously, the pitching on both sides was good. They had a couple of good swings in that one inning, but other than that we shut them down. In the fourth inning those two runs were huge. We got the big hit and then 'Rubes' (pitcher Nate Rubbelke) was able to shut them down in the seventh.
If Mike Cartwright could get the change approved, he would switch the format for prep tennis in Minnesota to four doubles matches and three singles instead of the current four singles and three doubles.
The Mounds View/Irondale/Roseville adapted softball teams closed out their seasons with appearances in the state tournament on the last weekend of May. One made a surprising run to the finals while the other ran into some tough competition.
The high school track and field season culminated last weekend with the state meet at Hamline University in St. Paul. Both Roseville and Concordia Academy sent competitors to the meet and they turned in some noteworthy performances.
In order to have a shot at a third consecutive state championship, the Mounds View High School baseball team needs to win its third straight section title. The Mustangs have two chances at that on Wednesday.
