Future of area ice arenas in question

Back in the days when most everyone who skated or played hockey, it was on an outdoor pond or lake. Getting ice depended on “Mother Nature” to supply cold enough weather to freeze water.
Then came the flooding of outdoor rinks. Suddenly ice sheets popped up on every local playground as well as in many back yards.

Week five of the 2014 football season proved to be less than fruitful for area teams. Homecoming festivities at both Hill-Murray and North High were dampened by losses Friday, Sept. 26.

Volleyball: Polars roll past Pioneers

The North High Polars took their undefeated volleyball record to Hill-Murray Field House Thursday, Sept. 25, and came away with a convincing 3-0 win over the Pioneers.
North is riding high with a Metro East Conference (MEC) mark of 5-0 and an overall record of 14-0.

Volleyball: North stops Tartan in three to maintain unblemished record

The North High Polars weren’t mentioning it, but going into their volleyball match with the Tartan Titans Tuesday, Sept. 23 at the Hal Norgard Gymnasium, they had an overall mark of 12-0 and were 4-0 in Metro East Conference action.
When the dust had settled following the match with Tartan, the Polars remained unbeaten.

Lights at Polar Field: Spectators not only can see the light, but the action on the field

North High activities director Jed Helwig recently admitted he wasn't sure what really happened to fix the failing overhead lights at Polar Field, but he said it certainly was a huge success.

Football: Mahtomedi stops Polars - Hill-Murray halts St. Tomas Cadets - Tartan falls to Sibley

The local football teams were all on the road for games Friday, Sept. 19.

North High traveled to Mahtomedi and took it on the chin 33-18, and Tartan was at Henry Sibley and lost 14-8.

When any North High and Tartan teams play each, there's always an added sense of anticipation and excitement about the contest.

Raiders bop Titan VBers

In the opening of the Metro East Conference volleyball season, the newest member -- the Hastings Raiders -- didn't waste much time serving notice that there was now another powerhouse in the mix.
