Lake Elmo adopts transition policy for Old Village septic systems

A cooperative project with Washington County will bring sanitary sewer service to Lake Elmo’s downtown area from 30th Street North to Trunk Highway 5 beginning in 2015. While this is encouraging news to property owners in the area, many are questioning how to deal with failing septic systems in the interim.


New traffic signals to be installed on Trunk Highway 5 in Lake Elmo

Thanks to a sizeable grant received by Washington County, two new signalized intersections will be coming to the Village area in downtown Lake Elmo.
The county was awarded a $462,000 grant from the Metro Municipal Agreement Program to “aid in the cost of safety improvements” along Trunk Highway 5. The funds will be used to install signals on Highway 5 at both spots where Lake Elmo Avenue (County Road 17) intersects the highway. Dedicated right-turn lanes will also be constructed as part of the project, which is slated to begin in September 2014.


Highway 36 lane and ramp closures in Pine Springs

Work continues on the new diamond interchange on Highway 36 and Hilton Trail. Intermittent lane and camp closures of the highway between Interstate 694 and DeMontreville Trail during off-peak traffic times will occur through mid-November, a release from the Minnesota Department of Transportation says.


Teen sentenced for January road rage incident

Dillon Selbitschka, 19, of Maplewood was recently sentenced in Washington County Court for terroristic threat felony charges in a road rage incident that took place last winter in Oakdale.


DNR approves Lake Elmo’s lake use ordinances

After four months of “thorough” review, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has approved changes made to Lake Elmo’s lake surface use ordinances this spring.


Expanded hours at Lake Elmo Public Library

The Lake Elmo Public Library, located at 3537 Lake Elmo Ave. N., has added six hours to its public service schedule, for a total of 42 hours open per week beginning Monday, Sept. 23. The new schedule adds three hours each on Mondays and Wednesdays.


Lake Elmo boy, 9, dies from motorcycle crash injuries

A Lake Elmo boy has died from injuries sustained during a motorcycle crash that took place on state Highway 5 Sept. 4.
About 5:40 p.m. that day, a 46-year-old motorcyclist pulled off the roadway to the shoulder near 31st Avenue North to “address a mechanical issue” with his machine when the boy, Pierre LeQue, reportedly came out from a driveway on his bicycle, colliding with the motorcycle, according to a report from the Minnesota State Patrol.

Lake Elmo hires lobby group for 2014 legislative session

At the Aug. 20 city council meeting, Lake Elmo officials voted unanimously to hire Messerli & Kramer, a St. Paul-based law firm, to represent the city during next year’s state legislative session.
The city plans to make a $2.6 million bonding request during the Legislature’s 2014 session, and hopes the lobby group can facilitate discussions to secure the money. The bonding is crucial for projects “relating to city-wide infrastructure” and helping the city address groundwater contamination, according to Mayor Mike Pearson.
