Boys basketball: Tartan holds annual boys basketball awards

On March 27, the Tartan boys basketball team gathered one more time to celebrate a very successful season.
In addition to varsity cagers celebrating their 23-7 record, Section 4AAAA championship and brief trip to the 2014 state tournament, the Tartan JV team, the “B” squad and the freshman teams were in attendance to receive awards.

Spartan’s State Tournament visit matches their mascot

Toward the end of their season, the Simley Spartan regrouped and, rolling with momentum, tore through the Section 4AAA girls basketball finals to gain their third trip to the State Girls Class AAA Basketball classic.
Then, by the luck of the draw — five teams are seeded and three are randomly selected for opponents — the Spartans drew the number one seed Park Center as a 6 p.m., March 18 opponent at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis.

Mounds View grad continues to shine at Bethel

The Bethel University women’s basketball team has had somewhat of a revival over the last two seasons and former Mounds View High School standout Rachel Parupsky has been integral part of that turnaround. A sophomore for the Royals, Parupsky has had back-to-back outstanding seasons.

Bulletin-area natives provide 1-2 punch at Wheaton

Katie McDaniels and Ellie Zeller are the only two Minnesotans on the women’s basketball roster at Wheaton College in Illinois but they were quite the duo for the Thunder this season. They were the top two scorers on the team and raked in a number of post-season awards for their efforts.

Concordia loses in semifinals

By virtue of its higher seed, the Concordia Academy girls basketball team hosted Minnehaha Academy in a Section 4AA semifinal game on March 11. Unfortunately for the Beacons, home-court advantage wasn’t enough.
Minnehaha Academy overcame a six-point halftime deficit and beat Concordia 67-66. The victory sent the Redhawks to the section final and ended the Beacons’ season.

Central knocks Raiders out of section playoffs

St. Paul Central entered its girls basketball section semifinal against Roseville on Saturday with a better record but a lower seed. The Minutemen left East Ridge High School with an even better record than the Raiders and something even more important: A berth in the section final.
