SNAPSHOT: Taking out the trash

Members of the Long Lake Improvement Association posed with their collection following the group’s annual shoreline cleanup on Sept. 7 in New Brighton. Using trash pickers and bags provided by Ramsey County, nearly 20 association volunteers spent the morning removing garbage from 1.5 miles of park land along the lake’s southern bay. At the first cleanup some 15 years ago, members were pulling out dock sections and railroad ties. Now, the litter consists mainly of beer cans and cigarette butts, with a few more interesting finds as well. Next year’s clean up will again take place the first Saturday after Labor Day. (photo: Bridget Kranz)
