Farmers’ market volunteers sorted through a large bin of apples on Aug. 19 before gathering them into bags.

The city food shelf’s third farmers’ market will send off summer with another day of free produce for the community.

The North St. Paul Area Food Shelf, Second Harvest Heartland and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church are hosting their third free farmers’ market on Monday, Sept. 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. It’s part of an effort to reduce the stigma associated with going to a food shelf.

Around 200 people showed up to the first market event in late July, and 125 came to the second one in mid-August. Volunteers at the food shelf say they hope the third brings in even more folks.

The free farmers’ market will be at St. Mark’s, located at 2499 Helen St. N.

Volunteer Mary Brown says if the free markets continue to go well, the organizations may consider entering the cooler seasons with similar events, too.

The shelf is asking for volunteers so it can expand hours of operation. Those interested can contact the food shelf at 651-770-1309.
