NEWSBRIEF: Three-lane road now in place on Maryland Avenue between Arkwright Street and Payne Avenue

County crews recently finished establishing Maryland Avenue between Payne Avenue and Arkwright Street as a three-lane road. The county will record data on the change through November to decide whether to permanently make this stretch of Maryland Avenue a three-lane road. (courtesy of Ramsey County)

County crews have finished changing Maryland Avenue between Arkwright Street and Payne Avenue from a four-lane to a three-lane road. The county will observe traffic and pedestrian changes through November and welcome community feedback on walking, biking and driving around the area. Feedback can be shared online at ramseycounty.us/marylandlaneconversion or by contacting Rachel Broughton, Ramsey County project manager, at Rachel.Broughton@ramseycounty.us or 651-266-7140.

As part of the three-lane conversion trial, pedestrians and drivers will see the following changes on Maryland Avenue:

-The three-lane road includes one travel lane in each direction and a two-way turn lane in the center.

-There is a new enhanced pedestrian crossing with median refuge at the intersection of Desoto Street. Because of this median refuge, drivers have some new access restrictions at the Desoto Street intersection: No left turns are allowed to/from Maryland Avenue at this intersection. Northbound/southbound traffic on Desoto Street will not be able to cross over Maryland Avenue.

-The lane reduction for eastbound Maryland Avenue begins at Clark Street, so to minimize conflicts, drivers have some new access restrictions at the Clark Street intersection: No left turns are allowed to/from Maryland Avenue. Northbound/southbound traffic on Clark Street will not be able to cross over Maryland Avenue.

With the lane reduction and changes in vehicle access, drivers should expect some traffic delays on Maryland Avenue between Arkwright Street and Payne Avenue.
