Common Threads: The Immigration Experience Book Club

Join the Shoreview Library as it begins a new history book club devoted to the issue of immigration. Participants will read a series of books written from multiple perspectives, attempting to examine many of the common threads that link all immigrants, no matter their place of origin.

The book club will launch with a look at a classic novel of Scandinavian migration to the upper Midwest, as well as a graphic novel of immigration. Next, participants will read about the experiences of African-Americans as they migrated northward during the Great Migration. Finally, the book club will turn to more recent immigrants, with special attention given to Hmong, African and Latino newcomers.

The first meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 29, at 3 p.m., discussing “The Emigrants” by Wilhelm Moberg and “The Arrival” by Shaun Tan.

The book club will meet at 3 p.m. on the last Wednesday of every month, May through October. Meetings will be held in the book club room at the Shoreview Library, 4560 N. Victoria St.

All are welcome and no pre-registration is required. A complete reading list and copies of the books are available for check out at the library.
