South-West People: Colleen Loney

Colleen Loney

Colleen Loney, 90, of West St. Paul passed away March 5. Loney served on Dakota County’s Housing Authority for 30 years.

“Housing for seniors wasn’t happening anywhere,” Joe, her son, said, adding his mother got involved in the housing authority when it first started.

Loney served as the chairman for a majority of her time on the authority.

“All the housing and urban development that was done in Dakota County was under her jurisdiction ruing those years,” Joe said.

Because of her dedication to affordable housing, the Colleen Loney Manor was named after her.

Joe said the family was proud of Colleen. He added they were surprised by the number of units and houses that were put in under her tenure.

Joe described his mother as being an unstoppable force.

“People always ask ‘who’s your heroes in life,’ and she is number one with us,” Joe said.

Loney is survived by daughter Deborah (Joseph) Feist, sons Paul Jr. (Violet), Joseph (Kathleen), and David (Lynn) Loney, grandchildren Jason (Nikki) and Matthew Loney, Melissa (Ken) Lamb, Julie (Shawn) Henderson, Rebecca (Mickey) Bahe, Paul J. Loney III, Caitlin (Marcus) Vetter, Michael and Patrick Loney, Andrew (Jamie) Feist, Timothy Loney, and 14 great-grandchildren.

There will be a mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 12 at the Church of St. Joseph, 1154 Seminole Ave., West St. Paul. Visitation will be held at Willwerscheid West-Heights Chapel, 235 W Wentworth Ave., West St. Paul, from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 11 and at the church one hour prior to mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memoriam to the Church of St. Joseph, West St. Paul or Our Lady of Peace Hospice, St. Paul.
