Jan. 24 marked St. Anthony Village night for the Irondale-St. Anthony Knights boys hockey team.

It was the second year for the occasion, which recognizes the St. Anthony Village High School players in the merged program and features throwback jerseys from the village’s own teams that played decades ago.

“I think the kids enjoy it,” said Pat Fagerlee, an assistant varsity coach. “[The jerseys] were modeled after the jerseys that I wore, the jerseys in the 80s.”

The Knights hockey team sported the blue and white jerseys for the former St. Anthony Huskies program, which ended in the late 80s. Fagerlee played for the team in high school at the old tri-metro complex, he said.

Fagerlee graduated high school in 1985. Soon after, participation slowed and the program closed. St. Anthony merged with the Irondale program in the mid-2000s, Fagerlee said.

The idea behind a St. Anthony Village night started in 2018.

“Mainly that’s coach [Jerry] Hayes,” Fagerlee said. “He’s done a great job of being inclusive of the St. Anthony side of it.”

The St. Anthony pep band comes out, and so do some alumni of the village program. Fagerlee said he still gets out to play some “old man hockey” with a few of them.

And the team is undefeated in the St. Anthony Village games. It beat Robbinsdale Armstrong-Cooper 3-2 on Jan. 24.
