NEWSBRIEF: Mounds View Public Schools fundraiser nets new instruments

Mounds View Public Schools student musicians received a gift of 16 instruments from a local retailer.

In conjunction with the Mounds View Public Schools Education Foundation’s fundraising effort, Schmitt Music pledged to donate one instrument for every $5,000 raised by the foundation.

The foundation’s Rock the School House event brought in $80,000, and the music store made its donations, according to a press release.

“One initiative supported by the foundation is the school-owned instrument program,” said Paul Gronert, Chippewa Middle School band director, in the release. “Increased access to school-owned musical instruments and subsidized rental costs is a key mission, and through the Foundation’s support, we want to ensure that band and orchestra is accessible to all students in our schools.”

Up to 40 percent of band and orchestra students in the district play instruments owned by the schools, according to the release. Some 46 percent of students in grades four through 12 participate in school music programs — a 10-year high.

“Any student who wants to play an instrument can play,” Gronert said in the release. “And we make it happen.”
