NEWSBRIEF: Cold closes schools 4 days

Area schools closed their doors during a deep freeze last week.

Mounds View Public Schools cancelled school Jan. 28 through 31. St. Anthony-New Brighton schools did so for the same days.

Temperatures well below zero, and life-threatening wind chills on top of that, caused closures across the metro area. There may not be make-up school days, however. Gov. Tim Walz said that there won’t be penalities if districts fall behind the mandated number of instructional days because of the serious cold, the Pioneer Press reported on Jan. 30.

As of press time, classes were expected to resume as temperatures rose above dangerous levels.
