A Nibi Walk was held on Oct. 27 following the historic route of Phalen Creek. Such walks are indigenous-led ceremonies to pray for water. The walks are led by Anishinaabe Grandmothers, because as givers of life, they are also protectors of water in Anishinaabe culture. The Phalen Creek walk was led by Sharon Day, local indigenous leader and executive director of the Indigenous People’s Task Force. The walk started at Lake Phalen, the source of Phalen Creek, wound through the East Side and Lowertown and ended at the Mississippi River. The event was co-sponsored by the Minnesota Humanities Center, the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment and River Life program and the Lower Phalen Creek Project. Photos courtesy of John Kaul
