North St Paul breaks ground on 32-unit assisted living facility

Solomon Gustavo/Review City, county and state officials broke ground on a 32-unit Suite Living Care assisted living and memory care facility Oct. 25 at Commerce Park on 13th Avenue in North St. Paul. The $5 million to $6 million facility is slated to open in nine months.

North St. Paul city officials and others gathered Oct. 25 at Commerce Park on 13th Avenue for the groundbreaking of a 32-unit Suite Living Care assisted living and assisted care facility.

The facility will cost between $5 million and $6 million dollars. Construction is set to finish, and the facility is set to open, in nine months.

Breaking ground on the lot, said North St. Paul Economic Development Authority Chair Robert Dew, was a long time coming.

"This parcel has been eight or nine years in the making," said Dew, recalling the "unsightly" school bus garage that used to be there.

The industrial lot had "a few bumps" like pollution and footing issues that were worked through, said North St. Paul Mayor Mike Kuehn during his brief remarks before the groundbreaking.

Participating in ceremonious dirt tossing were Dew, Kuehn, North St. Paul council members Candy Peterson, Terry Furlong and Jan Walzak, County Commissioner Victoria Reinhardt and House Rep. Leon Lillie.

Once the 32-unit facility — about 20 assisted living units, 10 for memory care — is operating, said Kuehn, it will complete North St. Paul’s "life cycle" of housing.

"You can now be born here, and go all the way through the system," said Kuehn. He added the facility will provide 25 to 30 jobs, and Suite Living is working with Century College to provide training for students in the health services fields.

Kuehn said he toured another Suite Living location and he "felt at home" in the "warm feeling building."

The space inside, said Suite Living's Toby Mullenger, who does business development for the facilities, is designed to be open. He said Suite Living's priority is "safety, security and peace of mind."
