Sugar skulls

Celebrate Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, by decorating your own sugar skull. Registration is required. Open to kids ages 7 to 16, this will run from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the Inver Glen Library, 8098 Blaine Ave. E., on Oct. 22. Call 651-554-6840 for more information.

 

Green screen basics

From 6 to 8 p.m., Oct. 24, learn the basics of using a green screen. Work with a team to create your own video using a green screen app on an iPad. Registration is required. This is for kids ages 11 to 17, and will take place at the West St. Paul Library, 199 Wentworth Ave. Call 651-554-6800 for more information.

 

Sip & Spell

Form teams of two to five and register for the Sip & Spell Adults Only Team Spelling Bee. Up to 12 teams spell words in costume to compete for a good cause, trophy and bragging right. This will begin at 6:30 p.m., on Oct. 25 at the Croation Hall, 445 Second Ave. S., South St. Paul. This will raise money for South St. Paul Library’s A Book For Every Child campaign, benefiting Neighbors, Inc. 

 

Owls

Learn about Minnesota’s nocturnal raptors and some of the adaptations that make them skilled hunters of the night. Practice your owl-bilities with games and activities. Presented by Dakota County Parks, it will run from 6 to 7 p.m., Oct. 25 at the South St. Paul Library, 106 Third Ave. N. Registration is required. This is for kids ages 5 to 12. Call 651-554-3240 for more information.

 

The Real Paranormal

Join others for a scary evening at Simley High School, 2920 80th St. E., Inver Grove Heights, with the Dakota County Paranormal Society as they talk about how a real team investigates the paranormal.  They’ll show you their specialized equipment and describe how it’s used on their investigations.  They will also present some of the evidence that they’ve gathered on their investigations. This will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Oct. 26. The cost is $5 per person. Preregistration required at www.tridistrict.ce.eleyo.com.

 

Friends of the Wentworth Library open house

Celebrate the five-year anniversary of the Friends of the Wentworth Library from 2 to 4 p.m., Oct. 26 at the library, 199 Wentworth Ave. Meet the Friends and enjoy light refreshments. A short program will occur at 3:15 p.m. The Friends are a community nonprofit that has book sales and other activities to support the library. Trunk or Treat

Visit Emanuel Lutheran Church, 2075 70th St. E., Inver Grove Heights, from 6 to 8 p.m., for Trunk or Treat on Oct. 26. There’ll be various members and vendors with trunks in the lower parking lot. Inside there will be games and food for a reasonable costs. It’s a fun and safe alternative to Halloween. Parking is in the lot west of the lower level parking lot. 

 

Bazaar and luncheon 

On Oct. 27, visit this bazaar with handcrafted items and homemade goodies for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas begins at 9 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m.  A luncheon of homemade soup and a variety of salads is available from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Luncheon prices are $8 for 13 and over, $4 for 4 to 12, under 4 free.  Proceeds support the mission work of the United Methodist Women. Halloween Skate

There’ll be a free Halloween Skate at Doug Woog Arena, 141 Sixith St. S., South St. Paul, Oct. 28 from 4:40 to 6 p.m. Join the staff from the Doug Woog Arena, the SSP Mayor’s Youth Task Force and Wakota Federal Credit Union for a fun evening. This event is free to attend. There will be creepy fun, music, Halloween games, a costume contest (for safety reasons, no masks please, face paint is permitted) and trick or treating. Admittance to the event is free, and skate rental is $2/or canned food items for Neighbors, Inc. There is a limited amount of skates available.

 

Trick or Treat

Join Woodlyn Heights Senior Living, 2060 Upper 55th St. E., Inver Grove Heights, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Oct. 28 for an afternoon of trick or treating. There will be free trick or treat bags, candy, food-allergy safe treats, cider and cookies. Helping Students Succeed Workshop 

Helping Students Succeed is a free, two-hour workshop that provides information to parents of school-age children about special education services, the evaluation process, Individualized Education Programs (IEP), 504 plans, accommodations and modifications. The workshop, sponsored by NAMI Minnesota (National Alliance on Mental Illness) will be held in West St. Paul on Nov. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Wentworth Library, 199 Wentworth Ave. E.  To register, please contact NAMI at 651-645-2948 or go to “classes” at namimn.org.
