Boys and girls soccer section tournament roundup

Section tournaments got underway the second week of October for both boys and girls high school soccer. Teams from across the state battled for a spot in the state tournament. Lille News has readers covered with the results of the area quarterfinal games last week.

Girls Soccer:

Tartan played North on Oct. 9 at Polar Field for a play-in game for a Section 4AA quarterfinal bid. Tartan was the ninth seed, and North was the eighth seed. North dominated Tartan, and cruised to a 6-1 win. The Polars moved on to play the No. 1 seed in section 4AA in East Ridge.

However, on Oct. 11, North didn’t have the same outcome as the Tartan game. The Polars got routed by East Ridge 6-0. The Raptors scored six unanswered goals in the second half.

Tartan finished the regular-season winless, with a 0-16 record. North on the other hand, finished with a 6-10 record, winning five more games than last season.

The Titans were 1-13 in 2017.

The Hill-Murray Pioneers didn’t see any quarterfinal action, because of a first-round bye. The No. 1 seed in Section 4A finished the regular season with a 10-3-1 record. The Pioneers have shut out eight opponents in their 14 games.

Hill-Murray faced Concordia Academy-Roseville on Oct. 13, but the game was played after press time. Concordia defeated St. Paul Washington Technology Magnet 2-0 on Oct. 11. The winner of the Pioneers vs. Beacons game will advance to the semi-finals on Oct. 16. The winner will play either Cristo Rey Jesuit High School or Como Park.

Boys Soccer:

On the boys side, Hill-Murray faced Concordia-Roseville in a Section 4A quarterfinal matchup. The seventh-seeded Pioneers secured two first half goals to notch a 2-0 win over tenth-seeded Concordia on Oct. 11. Freshman Anthony Banderas and junior Joe Schoenecker both scored for the Pioneers.

Hill-Murray finished the regular season with a 6-9-1 record. Concordia finished with a 4-11 record on the year.

The Pioneers faced second-seeded Hmong College Prep Academy on Oct. 13, a game played after press time. The winner of that game will go on to face St. Paul Como, or St. Croix Preparatory Academy on Oct. 16, in the semis.

North High School finished the season with a 13-3 record, and a third seed in the 4AA tournament. The Polars faced Hastings in the opening round of tournament play on Oct. 9. The sixth-seeded Raiders left everything on the field. Hastings stretched North all way to overtime, where the game was 1-1. North was finally able to seal the deal in OT, to advance to the next round.

Tartan got handed the seventh seed, and played second-seeded East Ridge in the first round of the 4AA tournament. The Raptors scored three first half goals, and the score stayed that way throughout the second. East Ridge won 3-0.

In the beginning of the season, Tartan had a 5-1 record through six games. The Titans, however, lost their last 8 out of 9 games to finish the season 6-9.

North went on to face East Ridge on Oct. 11. North’s hopes of making a state tournament berth fell short. The Polars dropped a 3-0 loss to the Raptors. The Section 4AA Championship match is already set for Oct. 16. Stillwater and East Ridge will square off to see which team makes it to the state tournament.

North had a solid season, and one the team can look back on. The Polars finished 13-3, and finished with a 28-point differential, scoring 43 goals, while only allowing 15. North sat on top with Mahtomedi in the East Metro Conference.

The 2018 Boys and Girls State Soccer Tournament begins on Oct. 23. Quarterfinal games will finish up on Oct. 25, first-round games will be held at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., at each site. The locations of the first round games will be determined after seeding for the tournament is put in place. Games that take place through Oct. 30 and Nov. 2 will be played at U.S. Bank Stadium.
