Payne-Phalen Community Council meeting

The Payne-Phalen Community Council will hold its monthly board meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 6:30 p.m. at the Arlington Hills Community Center. Planned presentations include emergency preparedness before, during, and after an emergency, and a presentation from the Police Civilian Internal Affairs Review Commission. Anyone from the community is welcome to join and share any new business with the board.

 

House District 67B candidate forum

The District 1 Community Council and the League of Women Voters are hosting a forum for House District 67B candidates Jay Xiong and Fred Turk on Tuesday, Oct. 2 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the East Side Learning Hub at Harding High School, which is located 1526 East Sixth St. 

 

Mural celebration

Eastview neighbors are invited to an event to celebrate the new community mural at Eastview Recreation Center on Wednesday, Sept. 26 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. St.Paul City Council member Jane Prince, staff from the mayor’s office, St. Paul Parks and Recreation and St. Paul Urban Tennis will join the community for a short program and refreshments. 

 

QPR - Suicide Prevention class

QPR is a free, one-hour presentation sponsored by NAMI Minnesota (National Alliance on Mental Illness) that covers the three steps anyone can learn to help prevent suicide - Question, Persuade and Refer. Just like CPR, QPR is an emergency response to someone in crisis and can save lives. QPR is the most widely taught gatekeeper training program in the United States, and more than one million adults have been trained in classroom settings in more than 48 states. The QPR classes will be offered on Oct. 3, from noon to 1 p.m., and on Oct. 16 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., at NAMI Minnesota, 1919 University Ave., W., in Suite 400. Free Individual Medicare counseling sessions available

North East Seniors for Better Living will be partnering with the Hayden Heights Library, 1456 White Bear Ave., and Senior Linkage Line to offer free, one-on-one Medicare counseling sessions this fall. Board members and staff who are trained as Medicare counselors will be available to answer your questions, assist with choosing a Medicare supplement and Part D plan, and help with completing applications for Medicare cost-savings programs. Dates at Hayden Heights Library include Oct. 5, Nov. 2, and Dec. 7, and appointments are available between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.. Appointments are also available at the Sun Ray Library, 2105 Wilson Ave., on Oct. 17, Nov. 21, and Dec. 19, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Please contact the Senior Linkage Line at 1-800-333-2433 to schedule an appointment.

 

North East Seniors Oktoberfest Fundraiser

North East Seniors for Better Living invites all community members to join them for their annual Oktoberfest Fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 5 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The fundraiser will take place at the National Letter Carriers Hall, located at 1715 Van Dyke St. across from Plaza Theater. There is no cost at the door, but donations are strongly encouraged. Enjoy appetizers, a host bar serving beer, wine, martinis and soda, and live music from the Dave Kise Trio. Bingo with East Side Elders

Join Rebecca and Kala from East Side Elders for an afternoon of fun and prizes by playing Bingo on Monday, Sept. 24, from noon to 1:30 p.m., at 463 Maria Ave. Donations gladly accepted.
