NEWSBRIEF: Merrick back to school event

On Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Merrick Community Services, located at 1669 Arcade St.. invites East Side neighbors to its annual Back to School Celebration. For more than 15 years, Merrick has hosted the event to distribute backpacks, school supplies and basic need items to help prepare families for the upcoming school year. In the past more than 800 families have benefitted from the event that involved a number of community partners and volunteers. 

If you are looking for help with school supplies for your child, go to or call 651-771-9339 to register for supplies. Supplies are limited, so register early to avoid being placed on a waitlist.

Merrick is also looking for school supply donations, donation sites and volunteers to help prepare for the Aug. 18 event. Some of the most needed supplies include:

• Scissors

• Rulers

• Flash Drives

• Index Cards

• Scientific Calculators

• Highlighters

• Pens

• Pencil Pouches

• Erasers

• Crayons

• Markers

• Colored Pencils

• Backpacks

• Notebooks

• Pocket Folders

• Pencils

• Pencil Sharpeners

• Glue Sticks

Supplies will be accepted through Aug. 13 and can be dropped off at Merrick Community Services, 1669 Arcade St.

For those interested in volunteering for the event or to put together backpacks, they can also contact Griffin. Volunteer shifts include Aug 13-17, 9 a.m. to noon, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Shifts for the event day, Aug. 18 include 9 a.m. to noon and noon to 3 p.m.
