SNAPSHOT: Community volunteers build inclusive playground

Aundrea Kinney/Review • Community volunteers, including parents, teachers, school staff, Medtronic employees and Retail Construction Services employees, helped install a new, inclusive playground at Lake Elmo Elementary School on July 26, 27 and 28. The school’s former playground offered few pieces of playground equipment that children in wheelchairs or walkers could access, even though Lake Elmo Elementary is a district cluster site for children with medically complex needs. The new play structure offers a series of ramps, a wheelchair-friendly glider, slides and swings, among other things to allow children of all ages and abilities to play together. “It blows what we had here out of the water,” said Katie Yates, president of the Lake Elmo Elementary School Parent Teacher Association.
