As spring beckons, the Little Canada mainstay and its Flower Mart will ring in the season

When Minnesotans start to itch for spring, there's one particular sight that can send them into bliss: a greenhouse full of flowers.

It's almost the time of year when the Flower Mart at North Heights Hardware Hank pops up and switches the state's gears into bright colors and fresh fragrances.

The April-June Flower Mart has a knowledgeable staff that comes back each season, a helpful feature when trying to select and care for all types of flowers and foliage. North Heights stocks annuals, perennials, vegetables, shrubs, hanging baskets and more.

Mother's Day Weekend is always a crazy time, with 2-for-1 hanging basket specials for folks to take advantage of before heading off for fishing.

But that's just in the parking lot. The North Heights Hardware Hank is an incredible resource for so many needs, with well-trained, long-term staff. Even one of the younger staff members has a decade under his belt at the store.

"I've been here ten years. I started when I was 16," says service manager/mechanic Ben Schultz, who turned his high school job into a career. Other staff members at the store have even more veteran status, like Mike Willwerschide, who has put in 30 years at the store.

"Mike will have the knowledge to help you with almost any question regarding plumbing and electrical," Ben says. "I work mainly in the small engine department."

The store is an authorized dealer for Ariens, Toro and Echo small engine products, and an authorized service dealer for others like Honda, MTD and Kohler. An extensive rental department is another asset to the store, particularly for lawn care items.

"Our biggest rentals are things that will get your lawn in good shape: aerators, sod rollers, lawn mowers and power rakes," Ben says. The rental selection doesn't stop with tools, though. "We even have tables and chairs to be rented out for graduations."

If the Flower Mart isn't enough to get your mind springing into the warm weather months, North Heights' selection of grills will do the job. Weber grills are well-represented at the store, with the Spirit II and Genesis II on display now.

"Weber redesigned all of their grills, and we have all of their current models," says Mike.

Dog owners will find themselves well cared for at North Heights Hardware Hank, thanks to its NutriSource dog food program. People in the loyalty program get a free bag after buying 12. When the nearby Pet Junction on Rice Street closed, Hardware Hank absorbed its loyalty customers.

"The dog's gotta eat — and eventually, you get a free bag!" Mike says. "It's good quality food. Healthy.”

The list of services goes on: Hardware Hank should be your go-to resource for tool sharpening. From knives and blades, to axes and chainsaws, most items can be sharpened on-site or by a partner service. With sharpening or any other small repair, someone on the staff will know what to do, or know where to find someone who does.

"We don't like to turn down problems," Ben says. "We like to figure them out."

The staff at North Heights Hardware Hank will always use its decades of experience to rise to your household challenges.
