STEM Saturday at Lake Elmo 

This program examines how light travels, changes direction and is refracted. Participants will be able to build and engineer a colorful kaleidoscope to take home. This program, which takes place Saturday, March 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., is a great fit with third and sixth grade standards, but appropriate for younger ages as well. The Lake Elmo Public Library is located at 3537 Lake Elmo Ave. N.

 

Introduction to screenwriting

This introductory class will teach you the fundamentals of screenwriting. On Saturday, March 24, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., learn about dialogue, scene and rising action, as well as script styles and craft elements. This class hosted at the Oakdale Public Library, 1010 Heron Ave. N., will help you jump start your script ideas. The workshop will be presented by the experienced staff of The Loft Literacy Center. Artist talk

Photographer Jon Solinger will discuss his exhibit and photo book, Working Land, which will be hanging in the Oakdale Library for the month of March. This project involves rural workplaces in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. This activity will be held Saturday, March 3, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Oakdale Public Library, 1010 Heron Ave. N.

 

Identity Theft Prevention

Knowing what to do if your identity is stolen is important because an identity thief can hijack your tax refund, alter your medical records and prevent you from getting credit or a job. This class encourages people to make identity protection part of their regular routine. It covers what identity theft is, how to protect your identity and avoid identity theft, and provides clear action steps to take if it happens to you. This program will be held Saturday, March 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Oakdale Public Library, 1010 Heron Ave. N.

 

Music and memory with Charlie Maguire

Charlie Maguire, a songwriter and performer with Prairie Home Companion is offering a songwriting workshop to those with dementia and memory loss and their care partners. For persons with dementia and memory loss, music can be energizing and tap deep emotional recall. In this special workshop, Charlie will present songs written by those with dementia and then work with participants to collectively write a song. One workshop will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. March 8 at the Roseville Library and another workshop will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. April 5 at the Shoreview Library. Best snow sculpture of Oakdale contest

Do you have what it takes to create the best snow sculpture in Oakdale? Head outside any time after a snowfall and create your masterpiece. All sculptures are judged on appearance, relative to this season’s theme: “Summer at the Beach.” The creator of the winning sculpture receives a $100 Marcus Theaters gift card.  Submit photo entries by March 30 to nathan@ci.oakdale.mn.us. The winner will be contacted by April 2.
