Old World Pizza sets standard for fresh ingredients, friendly service

We have all seen restaurants that pop up quickly and close even faster. Sticking around for decades takes dedication and consistent quality. Old World Pizza is one of those long-standing local treasures, known around the Twin Cities for top-notch pizza made with the freshest ingredients.

Owner Brian Dzieweczynski started working for the company on the opening day in 1973 of Old World’s first location, and purchased the restaurant four years later at the tender age of 19. He has spent his entire adult life perfecting recipes and building his business, which resides today in a roomy and inviting space off Interstate 494 in Inver Grove Heights.

Brian knows the key to success in his industry is staying true to the more “old world” style of making ingredients in-house. 

“We do things the old-fashioned way: make our own sausage, mix our own sauce, cut our own veggies, make our own dough from scratch ... there’s a difference,” he says.

Each ingredient that makes or breaks a pizza is given a unique spin at Old World. The cooks shred and blend their own cheese with two different mozzarellas. The secret-recipe sauce is made fresh daily.

Old World Pizza features a lunch buffet every day of the week, with a huge variety of specialty pizzas, as well as pasta and salad options. Dessert pizzas grace the end of the buffet line. Guests can also satisfy their cravings for variety during the dinner buffet on Monday and Tuesday evenings.

“At our buffet, we can have 25 to 30 pizzas on there,” Brian says.

The standard menu offers 12 specialty pizzas, with pies that range from crowd-pleasing, classic options like the four-meat Meat Lovers Pizza, to funky and less-traditional. The latter category includes the B.L.T. Pizza, a vessel for tangy mayo sauce, fresh tomatoes and bacon bits, and the decadent Macaroni and Cheese Pizza. The pizzas typically come on a thin crust, but a thicker crust and gluten-free crusts are also available.

The high-quality experience at Old World Pizza is facilitated by a loyal, seasoned staff. Many of the hands tossing crust have been doing so for years.

“I have quite a few people who have been here for 15 years. We have a little over 60 employees, and my core has been here for many years,” Brian says.

A restaurant is only as good as its service, and Brian is proud of the feedback he gets from guests, a handful of whom have been visiting for four decades.

“We really strive for our service. We get a lot of compliments on our servers,” he says.

Past the dining room is an elegantly-decorated, 85-seat hall that is reservable for groups. Sliding doors can close the space off and create a truly private event. All kinds of special occasions are celebrated in the space.

“We do a lot of birthday parties. Yesterday we had a baby shower, and we had a retirement party on Saturday,” Brian says, adding the hall is also an ideal choice for sports banquets.

Few places can accommodate so many different needs — from family suppers, business lunches, groom’s dinners, to funeral luncheons and baby showers. 

Old World Pizza, time-tested and infused with tradition, is sure to keep serving Inver Grove Heights and beyond for years to come.
